How To Make Money Selling Your Photos Online

Are you a photographer and wondering how to make money selling your photos? As a freelance photographer, you have a number of options to sell your photos online. Selling your photos online with these tools can be a great way to make some extra money on the side or do as a full time job.

1. Stock Photos

There are several websites that you can become a contributor and sell stock photos to its customers. Here are some of my favorites.

  • Dreamstime-Anyone can join the Dreamstime community and submit their stock photos, images and videos online. Contributors can sign up here and immediately upload images for consideration by the Dreamstime photo experts. Once your photos are approved, your photo joins the Dreamstime database for download. For every transaction, you receive 25-50% revenue share. Once your balance has reached $100, you may request payment.  The more unique the photo content you are contributing, the better chance your photo will be downloaded.
  • Fotolia-If you want to have your photos included in a large database that reaches millions of users, sign up for Fotolia!  In addition to being included in the Fotolio database, you can also sell your photos through Adobe Stock, which reaches millions of Creative Cloud users. Contributors are paid commission via credits for each sale and 33% royalty for a Fotolia subscription or Adobe Stock.

2. Etsy

Etsy is a marketplace where people around the world connect to buy and sell unique goods. Etsy does a great job of providing sellers with a full, detail comprehensive seller's handbook to best utilize their website to sell your products. To join Etsy, there is no membership fee, item listing per month is $.20 and Etsy charges a 3.5% fee when an item sells. Also, what is great for photography items, instant downloads can be sold rather than physical prints, which is a great option for both the buyer and seller!

3. Create Your Own Website

Creating your own website to sell your photos is a great option for photographers. There is only a fee for hosting the website and all profits are yours, no commission paid to a 3rd party. Squarespace is a great option for building your own website. You can create your own, custom domain name, has options for customization, provides great analytics and is loved by SEO engines! 4. Smugmug

Smugmug is an online photo sharing tool to showcase all of your photos. Some features of Smugmug include unlimited photo uploads, fully hosted, unlimited traffic, embed photos on other websites (great tool to use alongside Squarespace), customization options, easy organization, safety and security features, SEO optimized website, and photo selling features (see the complete list of features here). You can try Smugmug free for 14 days and make up your mind from there if this is an option for you.
